Cheaper Gas and other stuff

- So exactly why was gas above $3.00 again? Is there suddenly more supply now? Gas in Missouri is as cheap as $1.85 it is also making people feel a little better about the economy.

- A pair of Muslim best friends will be on CBS’s “The Great Race”

- Dutch are tallest people in the world.

With their protein-rich diet and a national health service that pampers infants, the Dutch are standing taller than ever. The average Dutchman stands just over 6 feet, while women average nearly 5-foot-7.

[...]

As lifestyles improve, Maat said the average height of a Dutch man could reach 6-foot-3 within 50 years. The influx of immigrants from North Africa may slow the growth rate, but their descendants could catch up in a few generations.

But wealth doesn’t explain everything. Scandinavians, who are among the world’s tallest people at 6 feet, are not getting taller on average, apparently hitting their genetic glass ceiling.

“With better food, Pygmies will increase in height, but you will never make Dutchmen out of them. It’s just not there in the genes,” Maat said.

Are Pygmies not somewhat isolated populations that do a lot of inbreeding?

  1. Wait a minute…My grandma came over from Amsterdaam in 1957, I’m a woodshoe….Why the hell am I so short?

We’re only starting to pay the prices for gas that Europeans have payed for years without complaint.

  2. Tariq, Europeans have known that about the Dutch forever. The moment you land you’re struck by how many tall, blonde-haired people there are everywhere (and i’m not just talking about the women!)

And the Dutch are generally very healthy too (except for the fact that they smoke so much). Cycling instead of driving is the norm nearly everywhere - but not as much in Amsterdam. I think if other countries followed the Dutch model of promoting cycling as an alternative form of transport there would be a significant reduction in pollution that the individual generates.

  3. Maybe the tallest westerners but where are the stats for the rest of the world?

  4. Kashif:

I’ve actually been to Amsterdam, but their height did not really stand out to me until now that I think about it in retrospect.

I did notice a lot of blondes though (and I’m not just talking about the women either) and that Dutch sounds like English being spoken if one is not paying attention.

Riding a bike in America everywhere would be bad for your health as at some point you’d probably get hit by a car.

    Muslim Apple:

Dutch are indeed the tallest people (on average) in the world.

This article states that Americans have stagnated in growing, but I suspect that they are speaking of Americans of European decent. I suspect that if this was broken down by race, they would find that Black-Americans, for example, have gotten taller over the past 50 years or so. I am taller than anyone in my extended family with perhaps one exception. I have a younger brother that is 12 years old that is growing like a beanstalk. I would not be surprised if he is taller than me by 15. So I think it is something in the environment and diet that is making some groups grow taller under present circumstances

I know the (adult) child of a Pakistani couple in which the Father is only about 5′ 4″ and the mother about 5′ 1″, but he, having grown up in the US is about 5′ 10″. This is anecdotal, but I would like to see something more scientific if anyone has it.

I would like to see stats on different groups in this manner. For example: Pakistanis that grew up in Pakistan vs those that grew up in the UK vs those that grew up in the US. I’m not sure enough time has passed for us to see any significant difference though, but over time I suspect we would.

  5. Ay Tariq! The Muslim guys got eliminated from the Amazing Race after only 45 minutes! On the first episode! Arrgh…

  6. I have spent a fair amount of time in Holland, Sweden and Demark. They are tall. It is the only place where I felt like my height was normal. I mentioned this on my blog when I included a picture of the Nyhavn in Copenhagen.

I am 6′2″ tall, my brother is 6′2″ and my father was 6′3″. We had aunts that were over six foot tall. It is a genetic thing. In those countries everyone was kind of like me, tall, blond haired and blue eyed. It is interesting to note that the vast majority spoke English, and better than most Americans.

Tacitus noted in his “Germania” that the German peoples were a tall light to reddish hair peoples. He said of the men that they tended to be a bit lazy and only got excited and aroused in combat where they were known for feats of strength and uncommon bravery. This was written some 2,000 years ago.

I guess things have changed. Germans have stopped killing people and become very industrious, so some things can change I guess.

Anyway, I am glad I am tall. I wouldnt mind being a few inches taller. I think my boys have taken the heigth from my side of the family. Sinan is on the 97% percentile for his heigth and Sayf 90%. Alhamdulillah.

  7. Did you eve notice that most dictators are short? Inferiority complex? Napolean, Hitler, Stalin, that guy in Iran, Bush…etc.
