I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy in Illinois has some mental problem - as seems to be the case with Adam Gadahn.
I am not saying that this makes them any less dangerous (in fact it makes them more dangerous as they can’t be reasoned with). I am only establishing a pattern. Just looking at the guys statements one can see that he is not all there to even conceive of such a thing.
Finally, I read this analysis (hat tip Eteraz) saying that Derrick was not very bright (that much is clear) but the problem is that he seemed to be a more than willing participant in this plot. And that is still a problem.
Whatever the case, this story will be used to further dehumanize Muslims as this story seems to have gotten more attention than this one - which was in the same area

The problem is that we have so many nuts in the community, who are not rational, that they can take some of these ideas that exist in the community, and run with them to dire consequences, Fortunately, a lot of these guys are too stupid to make good on there intentions.
I wonder if we should be careful of labeling everyone who acts in ways that we ourselves wouldn’t, as “crazy” or mentally insane. I’m not saying this cat wasn’t off his rocker - just tossing that out there as a precautionary statement. We are often quick to banish any elements of our community that shine less than favorably upon us in the public sphere to the margins.

Yeah, I read that too. He was not a Muslim, rather a member of the Nation of Islam.

Whatever he was, he was also a sad and lonely person, angry at the world and what he felt as its injustice. The way he found to express his mental state is just a reflection of his misery. May God have mercy on him, and Alhamdulillah, that he was discovered before anyone was hurt.

This guy seems to have played too many video games. Grenades with a 15 second timer that you can hear, fast pace walking away from it as he places it on the ground, steak knives, tactical? If this was somehow not related to the Muslims due to his name and affiliation, I wouldnt be able to keep back the laughs from such a Gomer Pyle/wanna be “tactical” rambo.
