- Growing homelessness in N Virginia - Cost of living rising too fast for some here
- Does having fat kids mean you’re a bad parent - The 200lb 8 year old in the article binges on hamburgers, sausages, chips, biscuits and chocolate everyday. He eats every 20 minutes. I know of a similar situation where the nine year old has to be well over 200lbs, the 6 year old is around 110lbs and the 2 year old is around 50 lbs. Yes, I think it is child abuse. Problem is that many parents think it is “cute”

Working in the health field, I would call it child ‘negligence’ more so than abuse. These parents really don’t care about their children because they fail to grasp the seriousness of condition their children to lead a life of sedentary and excessive eating. Beyond aesthetics benefits of fitness and well being, it has its long term benefits.
Why should parents save for their children’s future colleges if they are just subjecting them to a life of sedentary? in fact sabotaging their children’s future. Being an obese child means becoming a unhealthy, unhappy obese adult, and unless the child finds themselves in a second life in a famine stricken country the likelihood of an obese child changing bad habits are slim to nothing and they’ll just want an instant gratification procedure like gastric bypass. Anyone obese is at risk for chronic disease like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol which eventually leads to heart attack.
I remember my brother once told me, “ when the majority of the people from the Republic of Rome became obese, that was an indication of the demise of their great civilization”.
Which brings me to my second thought, I have seen this trend of obesity increases among Muslims in America families too. I wonder has anyone else noticed, the fat Muslims man, women and children in their communities?

I have noticed the obesity and flat out being out of shape. Bad diet along with lack of exercise. Go to work and sit, go home and sit. The wife does a lot of sitting at home. We need to start working out
I agree with everything S said…and subhanAllah, it’s quite disgusting and gross. It’s really sad how we live these days when you think of narrations of how a month would go by and ummahatul mu’mineen wouldn’t even light a fire in their houses…or how during the boycott, a group of men would share one date. La huwla wa la quwwata illa billah.
“Then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delight (you indulged in, in this world)!” (102:
As salaam alaikum.
Two questions, one answer… Islam.
The social justice that exists within our deen coupled with the straight, modest, middle path does away with poverty and guttony all at the same time.
Have you offered salat today? Do it now — if you have offer some nafl salat, make a good dua’a with some sadaqah for these causes — a small step towards fixing these social ills.
Wa salaama,

I wouldn’t really say having a fat child is abuse, more like neglect. I also think it has a lot to do with how much money you have and how educated you are. People living on food stamps are more likely to be overweight because the cheapest foods are high in sugars, fats, processed crap, etc. There is really no reason for rich people to be obese in my opinion. No offense to anyone here. When you have money you can afford to get decent food, have time to exercise, etc. Its not like that in all places however. In Egypt there is a saying that the way you can tell the rich from the poor is by how fat they are. The rich are fat and the poor are thin
