UPDATE 4: For those in the DC area, the latest Muslim Link has lots of emotional reflections on the VT tragedy. FYI, MSA-National’s fundraising goal is $25,000.00 for his family

UPDATE 3: For everyone planning to travel to Blacksburg for Waleed’s janazah (funeral), it will be held today (April 19) at 1:30PM at Masjid Al-Ihsan.

UPDATE 2: Waleed helped save a life

According to Randy Dymond, a civil engineering professor at Virginia Tech, Mr. Shaalan saved the life of a fellow graduate student just before he died. Mr. Dymond said the student recounted to him how he and Mr. Shaalan were both in the first classroom the gunman entered. Mr. Shaalan was badly wounded and lay beside the student, who was not shot but played dead, as the gunman returned two times searching for signs of life. Just as the gunman noticed the student, Mr. Shaalan made a move to distract him, at which point he was shot a second time and died. The student believed that Mr. Shaalan purposefully distracted the shooter to save him, Mr. Dymond said

Check out the video…it is a beautiful reminder.

May Allah swt give solace to the hearts of all the families of the victims. And I pray that the human society stops the violence against innocent people wherever we are in this world.

I wonder can the human civilization achieve a day in this world where nobody shoots a gun? Just One Day of Peace ? Few months ago my sister and I came across a documentary film called “Peace One Day” by Jeremy Gilley Launched in 1999. Inspired by the film, we have decided (as Somali women) to revive the campaign to apply a Day Of Peace (cease fire). It is on Sept 21st of every year. Unfortunately most people don’t know that there is a fixed date of Peace. I understand this site has a large readership, and I am opening to the readers a question, how can we re-launch and put into practice A DAY OF PEACE from DC metro-politan area Muslims?

  2. Insha’Allah he is accepted as a martyr and we all know the virtues of that.

I don’t really support, “a day of peace” for Muslims. Islam is our life, we should live our entire lives in peaceful existence. This day for this and day for that is really an imitation from the kufar with well meaning sentiments, but doesn’t address the problems of the Muslims. Muslims already have the answers to their problems and it is laid out clearly for us. This day of peace sounds good but would probably attract the likes of the Muslims who only abstain from haram during the days of Ramadan and then break their fast with a cigerette.

  4. Umma Adam,

You make an excellent point, that we should live our entire existence in peace. This is just for those of us who are already practicing to reach out to others who are not, and we plant the “seed”. I am a dreamer…
