Illegal Immigration hurts black Americans
From Vanderbilt News Service:
New research by a Vanderbilt professor of law and political science found that illegal immigration is hurting African Americans and the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) is not doing enough about it.
In a new book of essays called Debating Immigration, which Carol Swain edited and contributed to, Swain said that African Americans are losing more jobs to illegal immigrants than other racial or ethic groups, yet low income black workers don’t have political input in the debate
[...]
Swain used a study conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center, which found high unemployment rates among African Americans and Hispanics was partially attributed to the large number of low-skilled immigrants. Swain added that lax or non-existent immigration rules help businesses get away with hiring illegal immigrants instead of legal workers.
“The greatest competition occurs among people at the margins of society; a multi-racial group that includes poorly educated blacks, whites and Hispanics who compete against each other and against new immigrants for low-wage, low-skill jobs.”
Miami activist opposes illegal immigrant amnesty
T. Willard Fair, an ally of former Gov. Jeb Bush, is the new face of opposition to proposals like one championed by President Bush to allow undocumented immigrants to gain citizenship.
Fair, president of the Urban League of Greater Miami, is appearing in ads in The Washington Post and RollCall, a Capitol Hill newspaper, saying that “to black Americans, amnesty is an immoral seizure of our jobs.
”Amnesty for illegal workers is not just a slap in the face to black Americans. It’s an economic disaster,” he says in the ad, which identifies him as a civil rights leader, not as an Urban League executive.

Illegal immigration will always be here, as will people willing to work harder for less. The answer is to put yourself in a position where you are not competing for these low pay jobs any more.
Education.
LEGAL cheap immigrants are displacing blacks in the market too. This is allowed to happen because they are seen as more hard working and more law abiding than blacks. On top of it Mexicans are not very fond of blacks and blacks are forced out of every city in which the Mexicans arrive in large numbers. That said, I don’t see much blacks can do to stop this as they don’t have the numbers, the will or the political power to stop it.
Abu Sinan you make a good point and it is a solution for some but not everyone is going to get an education. literally millions of blacks are being displaced in the workforce. blacks are being sold up the river by their own “leadership”. Maxine Waters for example is from a Congressional district that is now mostly hispanic. The bad situation of the masses will also give Sharpton and Jackson something to complain about and give them power and blame whitey while ignoring the real culprit - illegal immigration
but like you alluded too many blacks are under-educated and/or unskilled and as a result are forced to compete with the illegals who will work for lower pay for the low-level jobs. They are losing the battle and will continue to lose as we are beyond the tipping point. blacks only have themselves to blame
Why are illegals more important than legal citizens?
International Companies control governments of Third World Countries: they impose regulations through such organisations as the IMF & World Bank thus screwing the Mexicans, Africans etc.
These people then have the need for a better life and because International powers will not leave them in peace they have no where to go except to the West.
So basically, Developed countries screw the underdeveloped countries and thus making it so tough that those who can escape do escape and have every right to build themselves a better life.
You want a solution; tear down international companies and the financial system. Go back to one that is solid in structure and not one based on fiat money and a speculative market.
Just food for thought
This issue is fascinating. Sometimes I find that the issue is divisive and works to pit mmigrants and Blacks against each other. Other times, I find that the spirit of multi-culturalism works to silence specifically Black issues. I have to agree that immigrant laborers have replaced the jobs that Blacks had historically. But this is a long standing issue, that I see going back to the massive immigration of Irish, Eastern and Southern Europeans.
Sometimes immigrant networks make it impossible for working class blacks to compete in the labor market This is especially the case in positions like small grocers, taxi cab drivers, carpentry (in California), etc. You can also see the disparity in the innercity as AA neighborhoods are often flooded by immigrant run stores, while immigrant neighborhoods have stores owned by members of their community which cater to their needs.
On the other hand, many African Americans aren’t down to work the jobs that illegal immigrants take: busers, agricultural work, underpaid and overworked. So what happens if you get rid of undocumented workers? You think that we’re going to run into the fields? Do you think our youth are going to take summer jobs? Are we really down for migrant labor and figuring out how to educate our children in migrant schools?
At this point, AA should work towards creating a better life for themselves and their children. Illegal immigrants are not their enemy, nor are they undermining their social position. Education is a key, honest employment, and honest and well thought out entreprenuership that builds wealth and serves our communities.
I think African Americans hurt African Americans, not Immigrants. I would hire an Immigrant over an AA any day and I’m not saying this because I’m racist but because of what I’ve experienced.
My family hired some AAs to do yard work for them last year and they came unprepared, only did half of the work that they were paid for, stole a chainsaw claiming that they would sharpen the blades for us and then never came back!
My parents then hired Immigrant workers that they met at the local hardware store and Masha Allah they have done a tremendous job. My parents only initially hired them to finish up one room in the basement but because they were so hardworkiing and honest, they were hired to complete three other projects and each time we’ve been very happy with their work.
Not all AAs are losing their jobs to immigrants, in some cases, they’re just handing it right over by being lazy and shady.
Zahra, guess what girl? You just typed some racist stuff. In fact, the junk you just wrote reads like something pulled out of a Stormfront forum. Your statements are racist since you are making your decision based upon assumptions about black people and your limited experience. You don’t have to burn a cross on my yard to be racist. Racism isn’t just about hatred. It is excluding people because of their race. I hope you are never in a position to hire folks. I pray everyday when I go to a job interview that I don’t run into somebody with such simplistic thoughts. This is what I’m up against. That people who think like you would discount my experience and qualifications and exclude me from a position because I am black. You wouldn’t look at my resume and qualifications because you assume that Black folks are lazy? I think you need to reevaluate your position on this issue.
If your family wanted to make sure they were getting good work done, they should have went on recommendations from people who used the services, interviewed the company, and checked references. Assuming that I am going to get good work done because an entire racial category (millions of people) has a reputation for being good workers ridiculous. I have had shoddy work done by immigrants and indigenous Americans. I have great work done by both. Check your assumptions at the door. I find it especially ironic when immigrant Muslims make some lame racial essentializations and then expect white America to accept them with open arms. You can see where that same logic gets us? Let me correct that, I would have liked to think there was an “us” in the Muslim community. But statements like that reminds me that there is still a gap and that I’m subject to even more racist essentializations by Muslim Americans. You just made me an “other” by being so by disparaging my entire ethnicity. Also, did your parent just break the law (and in turn do something shady) by hiring undocumented workers?
Takbeer @ what ^ said!
Ive met a lot of shady and lazy Mexicans, whites, blacks, whatever
Subhanallah, I apologize to all those who I have offended.
I never saw myself being racist until now. Authobillah min shaytan ar-rajim.
If you want to truly apologize I suggest you sponsor one of our student’s education at An-Nur Academy …. http://companionsofthegarden.org/AnNur.aspx and if you are one of the sisters who move when a black sister stands near you during salat, I suggest you stand closer and stop leaving gaps in the salat line. Allah told us….DO NOT Scoff at others. Do you like to be stereotyped? I’m certain you are as a nonWhite person living in America, as they will NEVER let you forget in one way or anotehr you are “different.”
Most racists don’t consider themselves racist because they buy into stereotypes and common misperceptions. Muslims are suffering from racial profiling, being dehumanized and demonized as Blacks have been. Today NUMEROUS - around 200 black men have been proven innocent due to DNA testing. Their lives were shattered and many years lost which they can never reclaim because racist attitudes.
Blacks have made numerous contributions to the world and American society… the fireplace damper, traffic light, laser printer, see what’s happening in the medical communities.
Do you know Immigrant Gangs are rampant in the US, don’t believe me watch AMW, go to New Mexico (they’ll say stay away from latinos, but the truth is watch out for the gangs) or come to the DC metro area.
Zahra,
Apology is accepted, it is all about educating and challenging our assumptions. Then it is about edcuating others and letting them know it is unacceptable to exclude or mistreat others because of their ethnic background. I am going to look for some anti-racist resources. It is important that we as Muslims be in the forefront of these issues. We should have campaigns in our communities to interrogate our racist views and then seek to dismantle those destructive attitudes and social practices. None of us are free until we all are free.
I think there are three good points; the recognition that illegal immigration hurts black most, the need for education in order to not compete with illegal immigrants who you can never win against, and the fact that as Sister Margari said under the guise of multiculturalism talking about black-specific issues has become taboo.
[...] a $25 a week raise if there were no job competition from immigrants.” Some researchers feel African-Americans are disproportionately impacted. I don’t see how having 12 million workers earning an average of $5.45 per hour can possibly [...]
As many may know Junteenth is coming up fast. But, guess what?/ The illegals and their supporters have a march pallend for that day! Any bets on which will get more coverages in the news???
8 Jun (Notimex). - Before the obstacles that the migratory reform faces, defending organizations of the rights of the immigrants will make a national march the 19 of June to the White House to demonstrate to president George W. Bush “that we are not giving up”. The leader of the Movement By the Right Migratory Reformation, Cristina Lopez, and the defense counsel of immigrants, Jorge Rivera, noticed that with a possible cancellation of the debate on the migratory reform they would increase raids against the undocumented people, who are more than 12 million in this country.
Before it, Lopez informed in interview who “we are organizing a national march towards the White House to demonstrate to president Bush who we are not giving up and we will continue to fight for the right migratory reform”. He indicated that before the possible cancellation of the debate on the migratory reform measures will be taken to avoid raids and to create conscience between the community of immigrants, to press please to the Congress of the United States in a right reform.
On the other hand, the lawyer Creek considered that no longer there are immediate hopes of a migratory reform, in addition of which they would increase the casts against the undocumented immigrants. It indicated that if the subject is not discussed again in next November the migratory reform would be retaken up to three or four years later. The declarations of the defenders of the immigrants registered hours before Meeting initiates in this city the 46th Interparlamentaria United Mexico-State, where among other subjects will be discussed the one of the migration and the legal cooperation in security and subjects. The Mexican delegation integrated by 20 legislating ones already even informed that the meeting in a while occurs delicate politician in this country, due to the electoral process that almost went ahead a year, the discussion in the Congress on the war with Iraq and the same debate of the migratory reform. However, the delegation of Mexico anyway indicated that this interparliamentary meeting - that initiates Saturday tomorrow is one more an opportunity to establish a permanent dialogue about the ample bilateral agenda, mainly with the House of Representatives that could possibly open its own debate with respect to its project of migratory reform.
