On the other hand, we don’t help things along very much when we embrace isolationism and reject outreach. Islam has become all about protests and being angry about something - hence the “Islamic rage boy” caricature - instead of worshiping God alone, being known for serving humanity and leaving a positive legacy. This is the Islam that people embraced in the 1990’s - as the sister mentioned in the article. People wanted a positive change in their lives and not perpetual rage. People wanted to see something that would bring solutions to the problems on the streets and not perpetual dysfunction.
But somewhere along the way, there was a call to isolation and anger and this message was lost. When the people do not see us, it allows the bigots and racists to define us. That is why “all Muslims are criminals”

I think that his is a product of the brothers going too far in trying to distance themselves from the NOI. This is especially true in small communities with just a hand full of AA brothers. Brothers associated community activism with the NOI, so they ran away from it. Because the NOI mixed in the community, they did not.

An important part of charity work and applying for federal, as well as private grants, is creating coalitions with an aim to work on a project. In my particular community, we do not have a significant amount of Muslims who can bear the financial burden that comes along with funding the type of large-scale community work that you mention. As a side job to my academic life, I’ve recently started taking grantwriting courses in hopes of helping many of my friends and family who are social workers start an agency. I find that partnerships are very important to finding aid.

Again, we have been advised to not become angry. Obviously, we all will as it is a natural human emotion. I get angry when I see people calling for our extermination or when I see these maniacs misusing Islam, but it would do no good to react the way we have seen in the past few years that have only brought more damage. However, even in positive actions, considering that anger is something that we have been advised against by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I am not so sure that we should let anger drive any of our actions.

Perhaps we are disagreeing on semantics, but the only positive I can see in anger is IF it is used to drive a person to work harder and do more positive things. That is rarely the case. Not many people are going to see a positive reaction as ‘anger’.

Grant writing is good but there is limited money available. Why not just do volunteer work in the community. It doesn’t cost anything to plan a neighborhood clean up every month. Volunteer at a church to feed the homeless. To me that is better for interfaith relationships is to actually do some work together.
It seems like Muslims only want to do something if their name is on it so the can say, hey look at us Muslims. It seems very insincere to me.

I’m a tiny bit of a bootstrapper. Depending on government grants is unwise. The clinics are wonderful, and I’m proud of their work, but I think we need to begin where we are. It takes little to no money at all to tutor children, or even adults. It takes very little money to keep the block clean, go grocery shopping with old folks, regularly visit the abandoned in “retirement” homes etc. Bigger projects are important and worthwhile, but we should begin where we can.
A few points…
1) Having read a lot of LGF, I know that Charles isn’t about pushing racism. Neither are 99% of LGFers. Interestingly enough, the comment wasn’t about race anyhow, so I’m not sure why Farooq brought it up.
2) If two groups of differing theological perspectives come together to do something that both can justify as good, then that improves the world as a whole. Does that mean that their theological perspectives should be altered? No. What it does mean is that everyone sees that the two groups are stressing the bonds of peace and mutual respect. In these troubled times, that would be simply fantastic.
Honestly, if someone came up to me at my church and said, “Hi, I’m from the Southside mosque and I’d like to work with your church in cleaning up XYZ street on alternate Saturdays,” I would jump at the chance to serve. Inter-faith dialog is useful only when it leads to direct cooperation and action. I don’t think that dialog just for dialog’s sake helps anyone.

Yup I’m down with all the things that you two are saying plus the BIG STUFF. I just got in from an event where we gave neighborhood children back to school supplies, lunch, games, face painting & more. It was a lot of fun to see the kids enjoying themselves in a positive environment. Plus its amazing to see how faces light up when given a surprise gift. This was not a large scale event (it was solely sponsored by my masjid) but it was worth the time we spent putting together care packages for the kiddies.
I would have to disagree with you anon about there being little money available. I come from a family of social workers and married into a family of social workers. I spent all of my youth working in academic enrichment programs and I know that there is a lot of money out there.
Right now, my intention is to help the really good Muslim social workers I know start there own agencies.
I really have no desire to get known. The reality is that when your work is geared towards underserved populations you don’t get accolades. My husband and his brother worked in teen group homes. Some of the kids there were abandoned, others severely abused and others having committed petty crimes. So many of these children gravitate towards my husband and brother-in-law because they are Muslim and respectful of the children. I really do see something positive about a group of Muslim social workers and therapist coming together to create funded after-school programs and one-on-one counseling for teens and others. Every bit helps, right?
My point is that that we should do all we can on ALL different levels. I have the writing skills, I’ve acquired the knowledge and I have the time to write grants. Insha’allah I hope that we can continue the social work that costs little money while also envisioning bigger and better institutions.

I think anger and disgust was one of the powerful engines behind the civil rights movement. Anger also fueled the women’s lib movement.
In essence, any struggle against injustice or oppression will inevitably involve an element of anger.
Now how much we allow the anger to overtake us, that will determine the results of our effort. Sadly, too many Muslims are allowing their nafs to be ruled by their raw emotions. Obviously, that is reprehensible.
However, when we channel our anger (as opposed to stifle and suppress it) towards positive change (which often requires coming to face with ones oppressor), we are able to move mountains.
