From the homefront

My birth state of Mississippi is #1 in obesity followed by several neighboring states in the South. I was talking to a friend of mine and we were saying that the obesity rate is so high in the South because Southerners (particularly Black Americans) tend to eat strictly for taste. And unfortunately the foods that taste the best also tend to be bad for you

  1. I think it is also that in Mississippi we eat for various occasions, like people from New Orleans- if we have a meeting, we eat. If we have a funeral, we eat, if we have a conference, we eat. Anything is a good excuse to put some food out and by no fault of our own (e.g. if we don’t internalize what we are doing) we wind up snacking five or six times a day outside of meal times just in social situations.

One thing I have taught myself not to do living abroad is to eat something because it tastes good and someone put it out. But I definitely did that back home- eating something just because it tasted good, not because i felt hungry or categorically needed nourishment.
