I understand Ali’s point about not feeling the need to explain every incident by the demented groups, but I do think that Muslims - because of the regular idiotic behavior by those maniacs - have to do more to explain and distance ourselves from it. There are too many people trying to portray the fringe elements as the regular Muslim for us to be silent

The unfortunate truth is that “real” regular Muslims - i.e. reasonable, non-extremist Muslims, are poorly organized. In particular, the majority of American-born, English-speaking Muslims, converts or born into the religion - those who have the most ability to change this situation, are silent or indifferent towards matters regarding the perception of Islam.
I realized I was one of the indifferent ones, and now I’m struggling to find ways to help.
