Those who became Muslim during Desert Storm/Shield
Umar Nasser - a friend of mine who has done a program called Muslims in America for Huda TV - has a new project. He wrote the following
As Salaamu Aliekum,
I am Umar Jamil Nasser, a Muslim American. I have hosted 200+ episodes of my program “The Truth About Islam” for Saudi TV Ch2. I have also produced and hosted the series “Islam In America” for Saudi TV Ch2. I have also hosted and produced the series “Muslims In America” for Huda TV.
My latest Film Production is about the 5000+ US Military Members who became Muslim during the 1st Gulf War in Saudi Arabia. The Film is Intend to be ready for broadcast for Ramadan of 2008.
At the same time I will also be filming the third installment of my Film Series “Muslims in America”. I would really like to continue telling the real story of the Muslims of America. I will visit Muslims Communities, Islamic Institutions, Dawah efforts, Community Activism Projects, or any interesting subjects related to Muslims in America and include them in the Film. I am also interested in telling the story Islam in the Prison Institutions, and how Islam has change their lives and made it less likely that they will return to prison.
If you are able in anyway to help me to:
- Locate US Military Members who became Muslim during the 1st Gulf War in Saudi Arabia
- Find a contact who is able to help get access to the Muslims in the Prison System
- Find a contact MSA’s at the Collages and Universities.
Your assistance with this would be very much appreciated. . Shukran.

Interesting. I know of one guy who had converted before the war, but after spending a lot of time in Saudi, he left Islam.
I guess no one told him that Saudis are not the perfect example of what Islam is all about.
A lot of reverts, in their early years, tend to move around the various groups. Quite a few of them levitate to (what I would term) the extreme type groups. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has known reverts who have/still are with some type of Wahhabi/Tablighi group, probably because their outreach tends to be more organised.
The reverts, of course, don’t really know what a good example of Islam, so they naturally believe that the overzealousness of these groups somehow makes them more ‘correct’.
Hopefully somehow who would otherwise be a believer doesn’t get disenfranchised by going too quick too early. After all, many of us born into Islam struggle with the same things they have to deal with, but they feel an extra pressure to do everything right from day 1.
As-salaamu alaikum, I am someone who reverted to Islam while in desert storm. Feel free to contact me about it.
Shukran
